SELF  CARE AND THE  RIGHT TO  BE PAIN FREE  IS THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS SELF EMPOWERMENT – Dr. Minal Chandra

Empowerment is a word very commonly used a word that means authority or power given to someone to do something. Similarly, the word Self-empowerment means the process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one’s life and claiming one’s rights. The latest buzz all around the globe is about WOMEN EMPOWERMENT. The word women empowerment to me seems like a misnomer wherein women all around the globe seek help from others to provide them with opportunities, and authority which takes away the privilege of deciding things for themselves. Indian females battle health issues more as compared to the males in the society due to perceived interpersonal conflict, caregiving burden, domestic violence, and financial insecurity. Women are facing threats to their  health and well-being as a result of being overburdened with work and of their lack of power and influence

Dr. Minal Being a  healthcare professional and especially into the practice of Pain medicine which deals with chronic pain , its her daily observational statistics clearly states the prevalence of chronic pain is more in female . Society has eternalised the rhetoric of selflessness to control women’s bodies and minds and so they are not ready to accept the fact that  without taking care of our own needs first, we cannot effectively help others.  Though this statistics is worrisome, even more worrisome is the mind set of these females who are ready to be in their suffering   just not to disturb the homely environment or many times take a back to seek help. A woman’s experience of health and disease differs from a man due to the unique biological, social and behavioural conditions.

The society should be Pain free and so awareness about one own health is of prime importance. Conditions like migraine, Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome,  pelvic pain , knee pain due to osteoarthritis , back pain are few conditions which has  female preponderance.  With Chronic pain in particular carries with it personal and economic costs and psychological distress, and psychological factors play a significant role in chronic pain. Anxiety and depression can worsen chronic pain, and pain can exacerbate

The article aims to self empower women to live a life that is mentally, emotionally and physically healthy.

Managing your chronic Pain – The first step towards a healthy well being is self awareness  andself empowerment. The importance of understanding the value of one ‘s own self  is of par importance.

Chronic pain

The feeling of pain comes from a series of messages that zip through your nervous system. When you hurt yourself, the injury turns on pain sensors in that area. They send a message in the form of an electrical signal, which travels from nerve to nerve until it reaches your brain. Your brain processes the signal and sends out the message that you hurt.

Usually the signal stops when the cause of the pain is resolved — your body repairs the wound on your finger or your torn muscle. But with chronic pain, the nerve signals keep firing even after you’ve healed.A dull ache, Throbbing, Burning, Shooting, Squeezing, Stinging, Soreness, Stiffness sensation persists throughout.

The  question “is self-care selfish?” is inevitably present in every women mind . The question still creeps into the corner of our minds, falsely telling us that to practice self-care is unacceptable because it sends the message to others that your well-being is your only  priority. As people, we only have a finite amount of resources with which to operate, so taking care of ourselves really isn’t a matter of selfishness — in fact, making sure our own need are met only makes us more well-equipped to support others.Once you get the hang of showing yourself love without apologizing for it, you’ll notice an increase in security that comes with knowing you can provide for yourself. In contrast, selfishness is rooted in an unspoken insecurity that wrongly convinces you’ll never have enough.

Selfish means there’s a desire to take from others, whereas self-care is about replenishing your own resources, not taking from someone else’s priority. When you’re empowered, you can do what’s needed to make yourself physically healthy, too. You can exercise regularly, eat healthily, and get enough rest. When you’re an empowered person, your ability to take any  actions has a huge impact on your personal productivity and effectiveness. When you’re empowered, you don’t rely on other people’s acceptance and validation. Instead, you’re a very emotionally secure person
